I was lucky enough to attend the 2011 Summit Series entrepreneurship conference titled Summit at Sea. The conference was hosted on the Celebrity Century Cruise Ship and sailed from Miami to the Bahamas and back from April 8-12, 2011. Summit Series in an annual invite-only event that brings together successful entrepreneurs from all over the world. The conference features world class speaker sessions, networking and interactive discussions, and dance parties until the wee early morning hours with musical acts including The Roots, Imogen Heap, Pretty Lights, DJ Cassidy, Eclectic Method, Axwell, and Elew.
This year’s conference featured an environmental theme, with much focus on sustainability, environment and in particular, the oceans. Richard Branson kicked off the event in his opening talk which featured much discussion about Virgin Oceanic and their attempt to go where no man has gone before to the 5 deepest trenches of the world.
A few personal highlights for me occurred on Day 3 of the conference were playing in a 1980’s themed game of volleyball against Better Place CEO, Shai Agassi, (also formerly of SAP + Apple) and listening to Tim Ferriss, the author of the 4 Hour Work Week, talk about his new book, the 4 Hour Body (a must read!). The volleyball game, and talk, took place under the sun on a private island in the Bahamas and was followed by an afternoon beach dance party DJ’d by the Miami Heat’s DJ IRIE.
I have come back from the conference inspired with a new perspective on business and life. The speakers gave me inspiration, the people I met at the conference will become lifelong friends, plus I have a new respect for the environment and new knowledge on what it takes to grow a successful business while making the world a better place for everybody.
