The Vancouver social media scene has exploded in the last year with hundreds of unofficial members congregating on web applications including my favorite, Twitter. For those of you that don’t know Twitter, it is a Web application where you provide details of what you are currently doing, or what you are working on or perhaps an announcement about a new technology that you have discovered or a random thought.
If you are familiar with Facebook, it is similar to “updating your status” but with a twist. While Facebook typically connects you with your high school friends, Twitter allows you to connect to colleagues and industry professionals.
Facebook is for chatting about your weekend activities and Twitter is for chatting about your work day activities.
This is a broad generalization of course, as I often see twitter posts (tweets) from my tweeps (think peeps) about what they are doing for the long weekend, but for the most part I use Twitter to follow people that I respect in my industry, online marketing, and also what’s going on in the Vancouver social media scene. Twitter isn’t clogged with other features or distractions that you find in Facebook but the two are similar. While Facebook users update their status every couple of days, twitterers often tweet every couple of hours.
Shannon Yelland posted a great list of Twitter terms and tools in her blog post “…Every Twitter Term and Tool I Can Find.”

I may not be on the list, but I have some strong friends who are on this list. Congrats to you all!
Thanks Chris! You should really include Gus (http://www.twitter.com/gusf/) and for more Van twitter folks don’t forget the Twitter Grader Vancouver, BC list (yes they are different, which is damn annoying)
I found more people to follow on the list!
I’m honoured to be on the list. To address the concerns on what qualifies someone being a top twitterer, you may want to change the title to My Favourite 20 Twitterers in Vancouver – Sorta like how you have favourite books or favourite movies.
Thanks!
I’m with Gus, I’m twitter friends with the above people
though I did not make the list
lol
Thanks Chris
I am honored to be mentioned! Also I am so happy to see way more Vancouverites jump on twitter!
We gotta start to do tweetups! Funny I went to a Third Tuesday event last month and met two of my twitter friends in person – love it!
Shannon
Thanks so much for the mention, Chris! I’m also very honored to be mentioned! As you very appropriately mention, Twitter allows people to connect with each other within the same industry, and to keep up with Vancouver’s burgeoning tech industry.
It is people like you, Chris, and like all the awesome Metro Vancouverites who participate in these activities, who make this city vibrant and blossoming.
Thanks again!
how does twitter work. pls go beyond the basics of test >> webform >> public facing page…
do you guys sit there all day twittering?
do you have full time jobs?
what do you walk about?
i am intereted in twitter but for the most part I see it as shameless publicity, ePeen building and link-love.
btw, not saying that about anyone here, just the general sense of it all. i’ve yet to grab a twitterererererer (twitterer) that I’m interested in and follow them.
Interesting how a good 50% of that list is made up of people who work in some form of web-based marketing or some other promotional capacity…
I agree with tyfn that the list should be labeled “my favourite twitterers” since there’s no real scientific method to the selection madness here.
I would stick to the “Top 20″ title. All top 20 lists are subjective. This is not something that can have an algorithm attached for it, it’s very personal and human. Stuff like twitter grader is entertaining but misses the human aspect somewhat. For instance if someone’s tweets are engaging, educating, or humorous then how can a google bot or twitter bot measure that? The other day a twitter update by Buzz Bishop interrupted my day due to a laughing fit. I’ll keep following him. I am a little biased because I made it on the list, but still if it is 6smarketing’s “criteria.” Just my opinion of course!
btard has some valid points/questions and many other people have a hard time understanding why people use Twitter. I’ll tell you it’s not that we don’t have jobs nor is it to just get our mugs on the internet!
I am going to share 10 main reasons why I use Twitter:
#1 So I can connect with others that are working within the same industry.
#2 So I can relate with other people that may struggle in the same job position I have in this fast-paced web world.
#3 So I can learn from others about best practices and tools they use – to make my job easier.
#4 So I can find out something new and fast via word of mouth of where I live.
#5 So I can share what I learn and give back to others. People naturally like to help on Twitter.
#6 So I don’t feel so lonely working very long hours on the computer.
#7 So I can meet interesting new people and possibly meet them in person in future at local events or web world conferences.
#8 So I can be entertained and interact on my iPhone because my hubby has taken over the TV (watching Hockey -awk!) .
#9 I love eavesdropping. I done it since I was a kid with a cup to the wall and find it fascinating – Twitter is just that.
#10 And lastly – yes, once in a while a shameless plug! Which would probably make up 5% of my interactions. If you do more that that it’s bad and no one will be your friend and follow you!
Thanks for the follow Chris!
Nice List!
