Geo-Location The Talk of SXSW 2010

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Before heading down to SXSW 2010, 6S Marketing made a video for their SXSW booth, highlighting their services, and how to “untangle the web”. The video also hinted at a major announcement that was expected to take place at the annual conference, where in the past, major announcements and product launches have become the norm. Can you spot what 6S Marketing hinted at? Read More

BlackBerry Users Ignored at SXSW

Stickybits sticker barcode QR code SXSW

I am a die hard BlackBerry user and I will sing its praises to the highest rooftops but the SXSW Conference is already changing my mind and I’m only a few hours in. There are a couple of companies at SXSW Interactive showing off some very cool technology that only works on iPhone and Android devices but not BlackBerries. Why is this? Do they not have the budget to develop a BlackBerry App? Is it too complicated for them? Or do they just not care and it’s really a case of iPhone, Android snobbery. It reminds me of web developers that only design for Firefox even though most business still comes from people using Internet Explorer.

Regardless, Stickybits looks awesome. They offer barcode stickers that you can stick to any object and then link a document or videos and photos to it. You can then interact with everyone who comes in contact with that object. It uses barcode and QR code technology that you can ready using your mobile device iPhone or Android device. Maybe they will announce that the Stickybits app is available for BlackBerries at the SXSW show?

It seems like location based services are getting a lot of early attention at SXSWi and it looks like Twitter is going to announce their location based technology on opening day (March 12). Apparently Facebook has something in the works too and the geo-location battle is already heating up.

I am very interested to start playing with Gowalla even though I am a faithful Foursquare user. There is not yet a Gowalla BlackBerry app, but they have come half-way and made a mobile site for BlackBerry users who want to use Gowalla so at least its a start. Foursquare has a huge presence at SXSW getting ready to combat Gowalla in their little war. I have to give Gowalla the upper hand in this fight as they are based here in Austin, but I will be cheering for the underdog, Foursquare, and I plan to collect all 16 of their custom SXSW badges. Foursquare adds Montreal and Toronto

Foursquare Toronto

Following the success of the launch in Vancouver last month, Foursquare has added 2 more Canadian cities Montreal and Toronto. They also added 13 more US cities but this blog post is not about that. A quick search on Twitter shows a slew of challenges from Torontonians saying that they are going to out-Foursquare Vancouver. Here’s an example.

There has always been a rivalry between Vancouver and Toronto, and in the past few years it has heated up. They accuse us of being lazy and smoking pot all the time, but if you actually look at how many Vancouverites are checking in at restaurants, galleries and cafes, (and hockey arenas) on Foursquare, you would soon figure out that we are actually a cultured bunch.

Social Media Tool Foursquare to take on Google, Twitter & Facebook in Canada says @6S_Marketing

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Vancouver Internet marketing company, 6S Marketing (@6S_Marketing), predicts that Foursquare will be the next ‘big thing’ in social media and will rival the likes of Twitter, Facebook, and Google’s location based product Latitude. 6S Marketing’s President, Chris Breikss, is leading the charge in working to bring Foursquare to Vancouver and has launched a campaign on Twitter to collect votes from the public.

Foursquare pairs location based services with social game play to allow users to interact with Twitter networks via mobile phone. Foursquare is already wildly popular in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago and San Diego.

According to Foursquare Co-Founder, Dennis Crowley, the company will launch in Canada in late 2009, as mentioned in the following tweet to Chris Breikss: “If it takes us until November to launch Vancouver, I’ll send you a six-pack of Brooklyn Lager. (hopefully it’s much sooner)”

Tech blogs such as Mashable are speculating that Foursquare “…May Be the Next Twitter” and TechCrunch believes in Foursquare’s “Business Potential of Location-Based Services.”

With more than 40% of Canadians using social media, 6S Marketing predicts in a recent blog post that Foursquare will launch in Vancouver and Toronto in late summer or early fall of 2009 and be the most widely used mobile application ever.

The Next Big Thing: Foursquare to Launch in Vancouver

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Foursquare Vancouver

– EDIT — Foursquare Launches in Vancouver Sept. 9, 2009.

I stumbled upon a new social media tool recently that I think has the legs to emerge as the most widely played mobile game ever and become the ‘next big thing’.

It’s called Foursquare and it’s taking major American cities by storm including New York and San Francisco and is coming to Vancouver soon. Foursquare developers describe it as “50% friend finder, 30% social city guide, 20% nightlife game.” I think, that with the strength of the social media community in Vancouver, we will be the first city in Canada in which it thrives.
