Although I often stress that rankings are not the be-all of SEO, they remain a very important indicator of SEO success. Ranking trends, as opposed to short-term fluctuations, are very important to keep an eye on as an SEO strategist. However, Google has long had very clear guidelines against the use of automated rank checking tools – and who can really blame them? The fact that Google doesn’t want every SEO in the world pinging their database 5,000 times a day is not exactly surprising.

Internet Marketing firms have had a tough choice in the past of either toughing it out with the captchas and potential punishments from Google for using Webposition-like programs, or to rely on manual spot-checking.
