And the contest is now live, make sure you head over to the contest site and check out the five finalists in each category and vote for your favorite!

The first annual Illuminate Yaletown was a smashing success. On Saturday, February 21st, 2009, light art  illuminated Yaletown. As the only outdoor event to take place in Vancouver at this time of year, this event will brought light to a gloomy night.

The event featured light installations designed and developed by artists and architects, pyrotechnics, fire dancing, cutting edge music, interactive activities and a display of illuminated ice sculptures. Illuminate Yaletown showed off Vancouver’s hippest community in a whole new light! By 6:30 pm, over 20,000 people crowded into Yaletown to take in the sights and sounds of the 30 installations and amongst the crowds were some of Vancouver’s best photographers both professional and amateur.

As part of the festivities, the Yaletown Business Improvement Association decided to conduct a Photo Contest to document the evening. The first half of the photo contest was held on Flickr with 194 photographers joining the Illuminate Yaletown group, submitting over 1,400 pictures from the evening.

The panel of judges - Annette O’Shea, Gary Foreman, Chris Breikss, Jenn Lowther, John Blown, Rebecca Irani, Kelly Robertson, and Jane McFadden – sifted through the amazing submissions and they came up with their top 5 photos for each category – Best in Show, The Yapzi, The Most Original Photo, Best Uploads, Best Interactive Photo (People), Best Photo Using Elements of Design, Best Digital Art Photo, Best Long Exposure Photo, Best Yaletown Photo, and Best Building or Business Photo.

The top selections are now live on the contest site and now it’s your turn. Make sure that you go and vote for your favorite picture in each category. The contest will run until March 16, 2009. Thanks to everyone who went to Illuminate Yaletown and submitted their pictures, making the event one that will be remembered!
