Walking in the Workplace: Check out this Treadmill Desk

Update: Our treadmill desk was featured on CTV News! See 6Sers using the desk in this clip.

We were also featured in The Province newspaper on October 10, 2013.

Have you heard? Sitting is the new smoking. A recent TED Talk in Long Beach raised some alarming info: we’re spending more time sitting than we are sleeping! The effects of stereotypical office life — staying seated at meetings, long periods without movement, eating at our desks — are debilitating.

The TED Talk revealed the average person spends 9.3 hours sitting down daily, creating a sedentary lifestyle which contributes to 10% of the risk of breast and colon cancers, 6% of the risk of heart disease, and 7% of the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Not to mention hypertension and high cholesterol. Yikes! 6S is always working to improve our healthy workplace initiatives (we’re still loving the office juicer) and our next step was to invest in a treadmill desk. Why a treadmill desk? Here are some of the benefits:

    • Improved energy: Even a light stroll while working releases endorphins and increases overall circulation, contributing to alertness and improved mood. Maybe even enough to cut out that morning coffee…
    • Weight loss: Mayo Clinic researchers determined that if obese individuals walked at a treadmill desk for 2-3 hours a day instead of sitting, weight loss of over 20-30 kg. a year could occur. Check out Brian Slick’s blog to see how he lost over 40 pounds in a year by using a treadmill desk.
    • Customized regimens: A gentle stroll will take you through phone calls or working on the computer. You can pick it up to a brisk walk while watching webinars, answering emails, etc. Our treadmill has a Bluetooth component which corresponds with the FitBit system, making it easy to synchronize your progress. We have a Google Doc system in place for booking the treadmill in one-hour intervals. And even 15 minutes on the treadmill gets you a whole lot closer to the 10,000 daily steps recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General.

Looking to get your own treadmill desk? Our communal desk is the Lifespan TR1200-DT7 treadmill desk from Flaman Fitness, which is built to withstand shared usage. The desk is height-adjustable with an electric lift, fully supports a monitor, phone and keyboard, and has large armrests for stability.

6S’s President Chris Breikss has combined his treadmill desk with a FitBit to track how little he was moving before and after. His goal is to walk 20,000 steps a day, and he aims to lose 30 lbs. in time for an Italian wedding late this summer.

Keeping fit will be so much easier now that we can stay active in the office. With progressive health initiatives like these, it’s no wonder 6S has been named one of B.C.’s Top Employers for three consecutive years!

Check out our Vine video to see the desk in action. It’s also on Instagram!
