It’s hard to believe that spring is just around the corner. The changing season suggests that age-old adage: it’s time for spring cleaning. While cleaning out your closet is an admirable feat, 6S is working on polishing up our health initiatives, too. If your office is seeking to incorporate a similar clean-eating and/or juicing plan, we’re here to pass on some useful tips.
Why Our Company Started Juicing
We believe that creating a health-positive workplace keeps employees happier and more productive. Most of our employees are already very health-conscious: people walk or cycle to work, sign up in teams for local runs like the Sun Run, and take boot camp classes at nearby Kalev Fitness. 6S also provides healthy snacks like organic granola bars and sustainably-resourced fruit to our employees.
Now, we’re going a step further by incorporating a juicing system from local vendor Spud.ca. Spud will be delivering a weekly abundance of fresh, organic produce, tailored specifically for juicers, to encourage clean eating this spring and year-round. They came in for a juicing Lunch N’ Learn and passed on valuable info that we’ll share with you.

Office Juicing Positives
Quality Nutrients: Our Hurom Slow Juicer uses a masticating process rather than heat, ensuring more nutrients remain intact during the juicing process. It’s also quieter, making it more suitable for offices.
Energy Boost: We all hate that afternoon caffeine crash – but juice gives you a healthy energy boost due to its vitamin content, hydrating properties and small amount of natural sugar. It’s even said to boost your immune system, meaning fewer sick days!
Buddying Up: One employee makes 3-4 glasses of juice at a time and shares it with their colleagues (awww).
Eco-Friendly: After it’s juiced, the sustainable fruit creates a fiber that can be re-juiced, baked into muffins/treats, or composted using our office composting system. Apparently pets can eat it too. Yum.
Economical: Buying high-quality juice at local shops can cost upwards of $6.00 a drink. Making juice ourselves in the office lets us customize our ingredients AND save money.
Sound Disturbances: A lower-quality juicer (Breville) is louder and can disrupt board meetings and worker concentration. Our Hurom slow juicer (exactly the same as the Omega model) is quiet enough to run during meetings. We also purchased sharper knives to lessen the sound of chopping veggies.
Price: High-quality juicers and produce aren’t cheap; however, organic produce ensures you’re getting the most nutrients without any pesticides. Juicing is a health investment – it might be a bit pricey, but the benefits are worth it. Spud has a promo code (SPRING) until March 31, 2013 that will get you $40 off of a purchase of $200 or more.
As you can see, the positive effects of juicing far outweigh the minor negatives. To leave you with a taste of just how exciting juicing can be, we invite you to watch this 30 second video filmed at our office’s Spud Lunch n’ Learn. Cheers to good health!
