What’s new with Google?
These little icons showed up at the top right of your Google Search page. What are they and what do they do? In this blog post, I will explain what Google Search Plus Your World is. Next week, I will post a follow up blog post about what brands and marketers should do to take advantage of Google+ and this new feature, with an awesome infographic.
Google Search plus Your World
Yesterday (January 10th), Google announced the launch of Google Search Plus Your World. Google Search Plus Your World integrates personalized results into the regular Google search results. By clicking the left icon, the results will switch to include Google+ data and Picasa photos on the topic you researched. The icon on the right will switch you back to typical web search results.
There are three types of data that will start showing up in the new Google Search Plus Your World:
- Personal Results, which enable you to find information just for you, such as Google+ photos and posts—both your own and those shared specifically with you, that only you will be able to see on your results page;
- Profiles in Search, both in autocomplete and results, which enable you to immediately find people you’re close to or might be interested in following; and,
- People and Pages, which help you find people profiles and Google+ pages related to a specific topic or area of interest, and enable you to follow them with just a few clicks. Because behind most every query is a community.
Personal information helps users find information that is relevant to them from their contacts in Google+. For example, I am planning a trip to Hawaii first week of February. Using the Google Search Plus Your World feature, I can see which of my contacts have posted information about Oahu:
I have contacted both Mari Smith and Tom Anderson and asked for advice, things to see and things to avoid in Oahu. This is a great way to do searches on top of all the generic “top 10 things to do in Hawaii” websites and I would have never contacted these people without the new Google Search plus Your World.
Profile in Searches
You can now search for people right in the search bar. The autocomplete option will make it easier for you to find the right person, especially for people with common names. You will then be able to add them to your circles right from the search page.
People and Pages
If you don’t have connections that talked about a topic, and you don’t know who to research on that topic, Google will suggest people or pages on Google+ based on a topic. You can search for [soccer] or [photography] and find out who the most influential people or pages are on that particular topic.
