Changes To The Way Quality Score Is Determined

Friday, August 22, 2008

Back in July of 2005, AdWords introduced minimum bids for keywords based on Quality Score. This system allows Google to show very high quality ads to “Googlers”, while also giving advertisers control over their keywords. Since 2005, Google has improved Quality Score in many ways, such as the inclusion of landing page quality and landing page load time as factors.

Announced today, Google released that they have made further improvements that they will start to introduce in the coming weeks. Some details about the coming improvements:

  • Quality Score will now be more accurate because it will be calculated at the time of each search query
  • Keywords will no longer be marked ‘inactive for search’
  • ‘First page bid’ will replace ‘minimum bid’ in your account

How much weight does Google really give to the About Us, Contact Us and Privacy Policy pages.  I’ve been using Adwords successful for years without any of these links on my landing pages.  I have excellent Quality Scores.

In fact, I’m worried about adding such pages.  I’ve heard of quality score messages like the privacy page is not detailed enough.  I don’t want add one and then just wind up with a ding on my Quality Score.

Quality score is very much based on the search query, the term(s) being bid on, the term appearing in ad copy and finally, the term being present on the landing page.

At this time, I don’t believe Google takes into account the “About Us”, “Contact Us” and “Privacy Policy” pages for determining quality score in a content network / search CPC campaign.

For Local Business Listings/ Ad campaigns, one of the factors in how well your Local Business Listings/Ads will appear is if a “Contact Us” page with your business address is on your site; this is one of the places Google will verify your business information.

The Google-bot will also recognize a “Contact Us” or “About us” page for SEO purposes...but that’s an entirely different discussion....
